Restorations in composite and acrylic resin

Method, generalities and presentation of clinical cases:
Composite resin
Composite resins are restorative materials of the same color as teeth that also reproduce the shape and texture of dental elements.

They are often used in cosmetic dentistry because patients may in a single consultation recover their self-esteem and restore several teeth too, removing a minimum quantity of healthy dental structure.

1 Young patient, girl - After her orthodontic treatment, her two front teeth have diverged. Restorations of composite resin have been made, considering duration, cost and mainly because the patient asked for it, since she didn't want to use a fixed brace again.

2 Young patient, male - Was unsatisfied with the spacing and the appearance of his former teeth. We suggested a cosmetic realignment and a restoration in composite resin.

Anterior resin

1 Young patient, boy - from a poor background, showed a very bad dental condition. We guided this patient as to oral hygiene (teeth) and diet control, since he was working in the confectionary trade. Restorations in composite resin were the treatment chosen.

2 Young patient, boy – Partly broke two front teeth after slipping at the swimming pool. Taking into account the patient's age, the treatment indicated was the shortest and the most conservative: restorations in composite resin.

Resin + gingival surgery + restoration in the neck region

1 Middle-aged female patient - Was complaining of a painful neck region. After noticing a decay, we carried out a trans-chirurgical restoration (a surgery to expose the decay, with a post-restoration in composite resin in the neck region).

Generalities about resins
Treatment duration
1 to 2 consultations, in general. On the first one, a period of one to two hours is spent per tooth. Should another consultation be needed, then the necessary adjustments are made, followed by the final polishing and the finishing, resulting in a smoother and more durable restoration.
Post-treatment precautions
To keep restorations in a perfect state, the patient must take prophylactic measures (cleaning) two to three times a year. On the occasion of these consultations, stains left by food and accumulated on microscopic spots of the resin surface are removed. Resin surface is not as resistant as that of enamel and must be protected through an intelligent diet. It is for instance advisable, whenever possible, to avoid eating colored candies, drinking coffee abundantly or smoking. If it's not possible, patients should brush their teeth as often as possible.
Treatment Results
Increased self-esteem.
Durability assessment
Restorations last in average 3 to 8 years. They may need to be repaired or replaced more frequently if the patient skips the biannual control consultations.
Going rate when rehabilitation is carried out by qualified dentists
Values vary from U$ 75 to U$ 550 per tooth.
Advantages
-Painless.
-Immediate Results.
-Little or no reduction of teeth (very conservative treatment).
-Cheaper than to have porcelain crowns made.
Drawbacks
- May split or stain.
- If a treatment with an orthodontic brace is needed, restorations should only be carried out after orthodontics is done.
- Limited durability.
- if the treatment is realized by a unqualified professional, it may be responsible for a canal treatment in the future.
